We're putting our home on the market one year from now, in April '17. The house needs painting inside and out, but we're wondering whether its a better strategy to paint the exterior next fall, like October or November, rather than try to get it done just before showing in the spring. The winter might result in a little wear to the paint, but we've noticed that contractors are particularly hard to get in early spring, and we don't want to list it without painting. We had decided to wait til February or March '17 to paint the interior, to keep the paintjob fresh for showings, but now we're wondering if we should paint the interior in fall also.
Has anybody dealt with a similar situation? Would you paint in the fall or wait til the following spring?
How about contacting a contractor in the late fall or during the winter and line up a date in the spring when you want it painted? A fresh coat of paint always looks much nicer. If you have no choice but to paint it in the fall, that won't be a deal breaker, either, in my opinion.

Thanks. That would be the best way to go about it, if we could be reasonably sure that it would get done. Problem is, if it doesn't and we can't list it til later in the year, we're in a bit of trouble because we are retiring and don't want to carry our current high mortgage for several months on our retirement income.
I realize that there's no obvious answer here, just wondering how people would opine on this.
If you schedule the outside for specific time, you might find that weather interfere with the exact time so it is better to be flexible as to timing
And if you use the same contractor for out/in the interior might also suffer from the contractor's timeline being impacted by weather slowdown...
Remember you don't want to paint when rain might compromise the paint job either...
I would suggest you paint outside in dry month --
And schedule inside ahead about month before you want to list...
That way declutter will happen prior to painting and won't need to be done twice
Better to have the exterior painting over and done than rely on unpredictable spring weather. You can also find some better prices as you head into slower times. I would paint late fall, and then give it a quick exterior wash in the spring. Clean the roof, gutters and windows at that time as well.
For our interior we used low VOC paint, and while there is an odor for a couple days - it's mild and gone quickly, so you could do that practically the week before. However getting it done a month ahead keeps you from having to worry about delays, and has your house in an already decluttered state.
We are leaning towards doing it in the fall. Weather can be unpredictable then also, but at least we have more time to get it done, and it may well be cheaper than the spring. As to the inside painting, a month ahead sounds about right; tho some lingering paint odor may actually be a good thing when potential buyers come around.
People notice the freshness of interior paint much more than exterior paint. If the exterior paint shows no signs of deterioration (peeling and such) and isn't stained or dirty from years of splashing and such you should be totally fine. So get the exterior painting done next fall. Also inspect the house carefully for dry rot and stuff that is likely to pop during an inspection like rot under the eaves and behind the gutters. That sort of thing. Might as well have it dealt with now as any legit inspector will find it.
Leave the interior painting for much closer to your listing date. that way you can declutter and stage the house at the same time.

Make the appointment in November for a March 10th paint job inside and out. Easy-peasey.
