I think they're both very dull; the first one looks cheaply ostentatious. It's just too much. The other one looks like a large car park for a department store.
I think most of these old houses need to be torn down. Not only are most of them ugly as hell, they are inefficient and interiors are really lacking in use of space. Let's not get into interior design. Some old houses have closets that are basically a giant wardrobe that was bolted to the wall protruding into the living space. It takes up a ton of room making a small room even smaller. Let's not talk about old inefficient air ducts, single pane Windows, old electrical wiring and panels that are fire hazards, not to mention the 50 years termites had to eat the place apart.
No matter what upgrades you do internally you will not get more sq footage.
That's a very common design for my area of So Cal. Even many of the older homes here (30+ years) have garages directly in front or within sight of the front door. Flat roofs aren't really an issue since we don't get any snow or even that much rain, so the design works for this region, although I prefer a sloped roof myself. I like the overall design compared to the older tract homes around here that have even less character and look like they're hopeless stuck in the 1970s. To have a truly unique home, one would have to do a custom build, but the permits are impossible to get around here unless you have north of $1M to spend on a home and the time and patience to deal with the city.
That would look great in Arizona or Southern California, but would look incredibly silly in my area.
For much of last year my company worked on a California style "modern" house that was just completely out of place for the area. Square, "blocky" houses and anything stucco is just absurd in this area (and in this climate).
The house itself would've been beautiful and interesting....in Nevada....but not along the South River (Annapolis) just before flowing into the Chesapeake bay.
We have the same issue in our neighborhood.
The old timers are happy that the Latino gangs no longer rule, but they hate the new modern houses like mine.
I love the new houses like your's in Denver. That first house at the top of the thread screams "nouveau riche". It reminds me of the houses Persians build in Beverly Hills. Ugly.
Nice design, but way too damn big unless you're the Duggars.
