Submitted all docs to HUD through our realtor now they want our SS# Is that typical? I hate giving that info to anyone not in banking or govt.

I would only give it to title company or closing attorney.


I have handled 1 SS# in the last 10 years, and was reluctant and hesitant to have it.

If you are buying a HUD home it is a requirement to have it on the contract.

OK - gave them our SS #s, now we will be monitoring our credit reports daily.

Not that I don't trust most people, but I had a friend whose identity was stolen and it was a nightmare. The man stole his entire identity even getting a job as a professor in the math dept of a college 3 states away. It took years for them to straighten it out.

Just had this situation yesterday. Turns out the reason they needed the SSN is because a person of the same name had some tax judgements . So they needed the SSN to verify if it was the same person or not. Everyone including the buyer was going crazy for what turned out, because of an excellent settlement office, to be only a few minutes. They found out quickly it was not the same person.
