I recently switched home insurance providers, my previous provider kept increases rates. Originally I paid $550 a year, 4 years ago, it was from Electric Insurance and they had great deals that year for new customers. This year the bill was $1250, so we have switched to a different provider. Nothing had changed, no claims. I suppose things age, we had a new roof put on before we first started that policy, but I digress that's not really want I want to ask. Our new provider, Allstate, is $988 a year, so a good savings and the cheapest we could find, but I've gone to 3 different agencies and they all seem to add in little things that I think increase the rates. For example they say our home is slab on grade, 100%, and that we have an oil water heater. Neither are true, I told them the whole house is electric and that there is a crawl space. I did some research and it seems like homes built on slabs have higher rates then basements or crawl spaces, can anyone deny or confirm this? I know nothing about oil water heaters, but I've never heard of them in this part of the country. Before I call them on Monday I want to know if these things matter cost wise.

There are many factors, the biggest being replacement cost in the area, but also fire danger, how far from the nearest hydrant, crim rate, and even your credit. our house (3,000 sf) with earthquake coverage is about $2,000 and having checked around, is a good price.
When will people realize that insurance is one of the LAST things where you want to bargain hunt? Sure, price shop it - but with reputable companies that take care if their policy holders. Otherwise, you've spent good money for crap
That applies to homeowners insurance, auto insurance, health insurance, life insurance, etc etc etc,
