Yep, it will be very important for you to consider property taxes wherever you go. There is no prop 13 elsewhere outside of CA that limits the property tax increase like in CA. Also property taxes are high in the north east and TX. So just be aware that low cost home prices do not consider the total housing costs, which includes taxes and insurance and utilities which all vary greatly across the nation.
Not crowded and hot, maybe New Mexico or Arizona, the desert parts of Colorado, Utah and Oregon?
Well the high deserts in Oregon are hot in the summer but they are cold in the winter.
We moved out of CA 8 years ago and are very happy living near the mountains in SC. We did a lot of research on C-D and other websites first, then took a few days off and flew here to check out homes/cities in three states. We bought our house that weekend.
My brother left CA for Tuscon, my son left CA for Birmingham, my daughter also is in SC. Everyone is happier, better off financially, nicer homes with more living space.
