In the townhouse we just bought the hallway to the basement does not have a door. So every time the air-conditioner turns on we can hear it start (noisy). Also I can smell the basement odors.
I told my wife we need a door there to block out the basement sounds and odors. She says I am crazy, that no one has a door to the stairway to the basement in townhouse.
SO... if you live in a townhouse, its there a door at the top of the stairs to the basement?
Don't see what being a townhouse has to do with it. Every house I've lived in with a basement had a door at the top of the stairs with the exception of my current one, but it has an open stairway leading to a fully finished basement.

Is the basement finished? If the smell you are getting from the basement is because of humidity, closing it off is a bad idea.
Every home/townhome I've seen with an unfinished basement either has a door at the top of the stairs or bottom of the stairs depending on whether the stairs are "finished" themselves. Odd to have an unfinished basement area with no door.
We own a townhouse that we rent out. The basement is a finished, walkout and there is a door to the basement. I think it would be extremely weird to not have a door there.
The smell comes from the utility room at the bottom of the stairs and the boxes full of stuff we are storing downstairs. The basement is semi finished.

You need a door.
Home Depot. They come mounted in the frame and the salesman can help you understand how to install it.
Wife will think you are marvelous.
There will be loud noises coming from your bedroom tonight.
