To answer some of your questions: my attorney is slow on the uptake, seems to overlook certain issues, and I'm not sure he is protecting my best interests.
^ document your issues and send an email to your lawyer instructing them on how you would like to proceed. then wait for a response.
is there a dollar amount that you can assign to his negligence (like did his delays cause you to pay more interest/penalties/taxes during closing) ?
depending on the contract (and state) he may have a rite to the full compensation; but he may forego that rite if it will take a lot of time/money/effort to get it (and tarnish his reputation in the process).

Bring whatever you signed to the new lawyer you are thinking of hiring and ask the new attorney to review the document.
