Yes, the dirt is an issue as well. When we lived in NY we were two houses in from a busy road, the dirt in the windowsills on that side of the house was gross. The other windows hardly got dirty at all. And those windows are on the east side of the house, and most of our wind and storms came from the west. It was all pollution from the cars.

I have not thought of the dirt but several posters have brought that up. Hmmm.
I have two kids and avoided buying a home near a busy road, or on the main "through" road of a subdivision. We are on a quiet street, but it's still not as nice as being on a cul-de-sac like our old house. To me that's the best option especially with kids!
I am leery of homes on busy roads because when they widen the road, the front yard gets that much closer to the road. I've know several cases of this. I'd pass, I think, unless there was something redeeming about the house.
We had a townhouse about 30 feet off a main road, and up a small hill. Two months before moving we installed new carpet, and they were cleaned during the sale. Tons of dirty water came up and I was shocked because they were new. The cleaner said it is because we live by a busy road and had our windows open during the say.
I'll never buy a home near a road again.

When my kids were little they got a routine lead level test and the nurse said their levels were a little higher than normal. Not dangerously so.
She asked about my home and if there's lead paint and I said no, and then she asked if I lived on a busy road and I said yes.. and she said that's probably the reason.
The other thing about being right up against a road, especially a busy road, are the headlights at night. My father's house is like this and I am never able to sleep very well there whenever I visit.
Close to the road or not.. That is one beautiful house!
