I live in a resort area and we have a massive affordable housing shortage, tiny homes are being utilized as employee housing in the Aspen area with a lot of success.
All those tiny houses in campgrounds I've seen all my life.....and someone puts a tool shed and a porta-potty on a flat bed. What will they come up with next?
They're nice but the prices on a few of them is outrageous--50K for 250 sq ft. And they're shells, completely empty on the inside. It'd cost double to get them plumbed and electric w/ all the fixtures. Manufactured homes are still the best deal--18K for 900 sq ft ready to move in home.
TBH, for the smaller ones, you'd be better off buying an Amish-built shed and then customizing the inside to your needs. At least you wouldn't have to assemble it yourself and you'd still be able to select a lot of the exterior details and finishes. I've seen many of the sheds on the lot where I bought the one at my lakeside lot that are larger than my first house and would make great small homes with insulation, plumbing, and wiring. The only reason I didn't do that on my lake lot is that I refused to pay the water and sewer hookup fees. I like going there to hang out for the lake and the wildlife but there's no way I'd live there even part-time.
I think a tiny home could work for me, BUT I tend to have lots of stuff and would have to do a major downsizing to live in one. Plus the major issue is that they aren't allowed here, not enough square footage for most neighborhoods.
You have to buy land to put it in. Then, take care of these:
- sewage
- water
- electricity
- parking
