I am not a real estate agent. I do not live in a gated or otherwise controlled community and have no desire to do so.
Who the hell does this agent think he is? On whose property were these signs posted? With whose permission? He's not only lucky if he got any signs back, he's also fortunate that it costs more than it's worth to pursue him in court for the cost to others of any of his trespasses, whether on private or public property.
His excuses were simply reasons why he should not have put up the signs in the first place.
I sympathize with his desire to do business. One of the overhead costs of doing business is to learn the related law and FOLLOW IT.
HOAs are full of the worst people in life. A lot of them would fit right in to the murderous dictatorships from the pages of history.
I would never move to any place with an HOA. And the first thing I'd tell any Realtor is "Don't show me anything with an HOA, because I don't want to live around righteous commies."

Yes, it's the nasty HOA's fault that this guy was a complete jerk.
