Made a unwise decision 11 years ago. Bought a house in rural NY (Rockland County). Mixed feelings

I think you need to move to florida you might find something there you like . There are a lot of opportunitys for younger people there in florida and no state tax and no county taxes I do believe in some parts I cant remember . Good luck to you whatever you decide to do . I think you just bought too much house for just you .

Real Estate taxes in NJ are killers. I don't know anything about CT.

I read up on the tax rebate to the electric utility causing the taxes to rise so dramatically, so I guessed at Indian Point even though I KNOW it is on the other side of the Hudson.


So the burning issue:
What did you pay for the house 11 years ago before repairs?
How much acreage?

The fact that the same size home in Bergen County is less taxes than in North Rockland shows that the area has issues which cannot possibly be sustained. The County and State governments are doing nothing to assist, and it's killing the towns. It's my main concern even over the social aspect. Hard to stay in a place where there are foreclosures and pre-forclosures all over the place all due to something we, as residents didn't cause. It was due to mistaxing from the the local governments and school board.

It does sound like there is some reason for HOPE that the state will help. But hope is an illusive thing.

Thread takes me back. Friends in Jersey City had a house in Cragsmoor, NY, an "artists' community. It was atop a peak in the Shawagunk Mountains and contained 10 acres. THey got sick of paying for 2 homes so they sold the mountaintop property. I showed interest so they offered it to me for $95K...back around 2002. There was one neighbor, the George Innes , Jr. estate called Chetolah, a once beautiful deserted ruined.

He house and several outbuildings needed nothing. It was super insulated with electric heat. Downside was the location where there electrical pole kept getting hit with lightning blowing out TWO electronic organs.


I considered it strongly, partner said, "I would rather be killed."


So friends ran an ad in the Times and sold the place in one day.


Taxes had ben $1600/year and they fought to lower the taxes and got them down to $1200.


I could have lived there with my partner/husband but at his death I'd have thrown myself off a Shawangut cliff.

Pay can be kind of mediocre in Florida, so it's best to start an internet business or work online for a company.

I'm originally from the Bronx. Anything north or west of Westchester is "upstate" to us. Same way when we head to Manhattan we're going "to the city".
