Buying a house in Roanoke, VA 2001 (we were new to the city) I was told by an agent (listing agent) re: a house I asked her to show us: "you wouldn't want to be past Memorial Drive, too dark over there"

Another agent, 2014, small town (Rockingham) NC: "I'd worry about your safety if I sold you this house" ('hood was largely black).

If you open doors that are nailed shut, I'm sure people will write good stories about you!

I think most of you realtors are right about what you are saying but there are some cases where things don't fit the mold. I knew my target property was overpriced pretty quickly when I sat down and reviewed the comps. So had my realtor insisted on knowing my price range, we wouldn't have even looked at it. And it has been on the market a while now.

My realtor has continued sending me other homes including ones that are clearly above my price range. Most of these are auto generated so I don't get too bent out of shape. I know she is trying to help me. If she was pestering me insisting that I see those houses, it would bug me. Another thing I thought was funny was that the seller's agent of the overpriced house suggested I look at an even more expensive new construction that was up the street. THAT one just confused me. I kept telling her in no uncertain terms, it's the price, not the house.

First, there's usually a co-broke and depending on where in the country it is each company is getting 2.5-3% and then the agent gets some percentage of that.

Secondly, most an agents work is done behind the scenes and people don't really get to see what we do on a day to day basis for a transaction.
