I just signed a lease for a condo in a high rise and was basically told I have to pay a move-in fee that was not on the lease. My lease included a 500 dollar move in fee (in leiu of a security deposit), but the LL is saying that's his move-in fee and I will have to pay an additional 350 dollars to the building. The building rules and regulations specifically say the owner/lessor is responsible for this fee. Has anyone else dealt with a situation like this? This seems like either an amature or shady landlord...not a good way to start a lease.

Can't you verify move-in fees by contacting the owner of the building? At least find out which one, if either is paid to them.

Just my 2 cents, but any fees not disclosed up front should not have to be paid. You made a deal, signed a contract, and now the LL is changing the deal. No, it's not a good way to start a lease, but maybe a quick call to a lawyer would clarify things for you. The first call or app't is usually free.
The other point is why is the LL asking for additional fees that supposedly are owed to the building? Who runs the bldg? Is there an association involved with this condo? Are they asking for the fee? Even if you paid it, how would you know the LL would pass it along to the "building?" Who are they?
This whole issue of "fees" is totally out of control, whether it's airlines, hotels, telecoms, or apartment rental complexes run by large, predatory management companies that add all kinds of fees after leases are signed. Condo buildings usually have an association running things that are building-wide.

The LL agreed to pay the move-in fee. There is a HOA and a book of rules and regulations that spell out the fee schedule. The rules specifically state the owner/lessor is responsible for the move-in fee. I'm guessing I'm his first tenant that didn't just agree to pay the fee.
