I've looked at some of those people finding sites but they only list town(s) and relatives. I don't want to pay for searches if the info I need is rather general. Surely there must be public records that are free.
Otherwise, how to find out who owns a house? If it was kept by one person in a divorce or sold off totally.
Start with zillow.........type in the address.
right side, scroll down to price history (indicating any past sales), then tax info and below that there will be a line directing you to the county assessor's site. 75% of the time this works and will show the property in the county site. Once there click on sales history and it will show who sold it when. Sometimes (25% of the time) it takes you to a dead link but you can usually "start a new search" off the dead link and go in that way.
On the other hand, if what you really want to know is the contents of a divorce settlement, I doubt you'll have any luck. These are kept private, and rightly so.
Actually, they aren't. Divorce case files are public record at the courthouse and the decree (which addresses the settlement) is right in there with everything else.
I looked up many a case file during my divorce, looking for sample pleadings and filings.

if its not worth paying for its not worth knowing.
I frequently look up owners. There's an option to search back from there for previous owners. You just need to know the search word in your immediate area. The area/town/county next to you could have a different word(s) to search for.
