I know a guy who owns forest land specifically for harvesting trees, and he naturally replaces them to keep his business going.
He has told me some kooks out there would rather see a lumberjack injured or killed, instead of a tree. Some apparently sit there crying while watching the trees be cut.
Others of course sabotage the equipment or the trees themselves with spikes.

As to the higher costs, I have not spoken to him in a while, but when I do, I will ask him. However I think a lot of his trees wind up in pulp mills, not home construction.

Supply and demand. Mills speculated incorrectly at the beginning of the pandemic that demand would decrease during lockdowns and curtailed development. What actually transpired because of the pandemic is every homeowner started doing home improvement projects (decks, fences, gazebos) during the lockdown and interest rates dropped which created huge demand for new housing. So we wound up with huge demand for lumber and little supply.

It's political.

I saw some great quotes in youtube comments on lumber prices:

"Lowe's is now charging admission to look at OSB. They have a bouncer and velvet rope and everything!".

"I was going to build a deck but decided to buy a Gulfstream Jet instead".

Great philosophical quote:
"if you really want a deck this year, that means you really didn't have one last year. And if you didn’t have one last year one more year ain’t gonna kill you.” Be patient. Wait a year.
