We met with a realtor recently, who said that the average number of houses a buyer sees before making an offer is 5. That number seems incredibly low to me. We're probably planning on looking at around 30 houses before deciding on the one we want to buy. What do you think about that number?

I don't think there can be an average as each property is subjective...what one person likes another won't so it just depends on which buyer walks into which property at which time.
We looked at about 20 before we made an offer on the home we currently live in. The home before this we saw about 5 before buying...the home before that probably 11, and the home before that we bought the second one we saw.
You may look at 30, or on the 5th you may walk in and find everything you had ever hoped for.
good luck in your search...that is the fun part!

I wish it were 5...
A couple I worked with last week looked at 15 before making an offer.
Since the offer wasn't accepted we will be looking at more.

I went on a house hunting trip 2 weeks ago & looked at 8 houses. Made an offer on one, but someone beat me to it. I have 28 more to see when I get back up there in 2 weeks.

My very first clients looked at 154, yes 154, before making an offer. It took us 5 months.

Sounds like the realtor is trying to keep down the number you want to view, maybe trying to save on gas. If he or she is, as incredible as it seems, actually resistant to showing more houses, then you need a new realtor.

I agree with earlier post, wait till you find "home sweet home." For the amount of money you will be paying, the commitment and time, and all that is involved in home ownership, no one should feel they have to choose from among the first five!

Of course, these days the internet can make your life a little easier so that you can usually see at least one picture of a house before decide to view it.

Default They can't help it, it's Pavlovian...

You could always drive the realtor around, and buy him or her lunch, too. I've done that, and they love it. It also keeps me from being carsick, because realtors will lunge after every for sale sign like a retriever after a stick.

In most cases, it usually takes my clients about a dozen to see in person.

We're a realtor's nightmare. We must have seen 50 by now. But we have no pressure to move and can bide our time.
