Purchasing a primary residence is both for consumption and investment. It's not either or.

But how much you weigh between the two is an individual matter. So my question to you is what is your preference?

Ace,
I believe the days of buying a home to build a nest egg are long gone. With that being said, one should make a responsible financial decision when buying a home nowadays. By that I mean, find a home you really like, at a good price, and that has good resale value. By resale value, I don't necessarily mean appreciation in the historical sense as appreciation hardly exists in any market today. What I mean by good resale value is buy a home that will appeal to the masses (location, curb appeal, floorplan) in case you have to sell it in a down market.
It amazes me the folks that still feel they need to have the McMansion with all the bells and whistles even today while the market is tanking. Middle class folks like me will most likely be more prudent in what they purchase over the next few years.
