We're buying our first home, and they are starting on it today. When we looked at the model home, of course it was beautifully staged and I loved it. I tried to mentally remove "their" furniture and place our furniture in there, but I do think the staging of the home was a big factor. Prior to seeing the model of my home, I had seen an inventory home that was completely bare and it was just ok for me. The rooms seemed too small and I couldn't really imagine my furniture in there. That was a 2045 sf house! So the home I purchased is 2350sf. so in all likelihood, it will be big enough and I DID envision my furniture in it. But now I'm thinking...what if when I see the finished house- without the custom paint of the model, and the great staging as in the model, and think it's just ok? What if it's all finished and I don't like the house as much as I THOUGHT I did, because it doesn't look like the model? Has that ever happened or am I just being a worrywart? FTR- I did get all the upgrades I thought were important and even some that weren't that important, just nice to have.

Many stagers offer consultation time. Why don't you hire one to help you pick paint colors and when you move in you can have them help you get your furniture arranged?

Out here they do that for $50 an hour.

Cool beans! I didn't know they were available to do that. Since we signed, I've been watching HGTV like a fiend trying to get ideas.

My neighbors fell in love with the model home as well, and knew in large part it was because of how it was done. They just took A LOT of pictures of it, and copied it after they moved in to the blank slate, down to the light fixtures, pool design, paint colors and window treatments.

If you are not a DIYer, then like Silver said, hire some one to copy it for you.

Personally, while they are eye candy I always hated to see new or used homes that were 'staged' to the hilt. A lot of the time they get down to bare minimum in rooms. Like in a bedroom they might just have a bed (using full instead of queen, twin instead of full...), maybe a night stand, and if it is big enough, a cute stuffed chair.........WHERE is the dresser, the chest of drawers, the other stuff that often winds up in a BR??? A false sense of space is created and some folks just can't see space. Ya know?
They spend a lot of time/money on 'cute' furniture, accessories, pillows, curtains, etc. pulling on the emotion strings of buyers. Oh it just looked so cute !

So don't kick yourself too hard if it doesn't quite 'look' the same way as the model. It will be YOUR home and you have to put your Stamp on it And be careful watcing HGTV. IMO they take a lot of shortcuts. And they make some stuff look way easier than it really is- there is lots of 'stunt' workers in the background
Congrats- enjoy your new home! You will have fun, keep an open mind and go with it!

You are so right! There was one model home that had a loveseat and a plant in the bedroom and I was like- that ain't fooling NOBODY. It was easier to envision our furniture in this house because it had realistic size furniture in it. The master had a king, dresser, armoire, and sitting chairs and was still spacious. We have a queen, dresser, armoire...and I will GET a sitting chair to match. I've never had to paint anything before, so I'm wondering if I could just go to the sales office and ask what color paint they used and get the same colors?

I hereby give you a crazyma hurrah for your 'eye'!! LOL

Sure, go back to the model & confirm you like the colors. Go to the office and tell'em you want it painted like the model
Are they letting you pick paint colors??
If not you could always offer to buy the paint if they will use it and paint it for you...maybe?? Inthe grand scheme paint isn't that expensive....

Contractors/builders will let you pick your colors when they are building on a presold contract. So yes go to the office and tell them you want the same. They normally will not charge more than the basic off white unless there are multiple colors used and or dark colors, and if that is the case it is usually a hundred dollar charge for more than 3 colors in a house. In todays market I doubt they will charge anything extra.

I asked about painting when I signed and they won't do anything but basic white. Anything else is up to me.
