How does one get so discouraged they stop looking for work? That is really amazing to me. "wow, looking for a job is a lot of work, I think I'll just lay on my couch all day every day from now on."
Then I guess it is time to look for a new line of work or go back to school and get new skills.
Perhaps most of the people in that pic are looking for a new line of work. It's a recent federal job fair in Atlanta. School costs $$$ that often isn't available, and the people with the schooling aren't finding jobs either.
We have a major slowdown in our economy, resulting in less jobs available than those who want jobs. Some people are going to be losers (unemployable) no matter what they do in their attempt to find a job. I wouldn't expect them to beat their head against the wall indefinitely.
They have to beat their head against the wall indefinitely. What is their alternative?
Instead of spending time/$ looking for work, they spend time selling assets, going to food banks, cooking inexpensive meals, etc. Perhaps the economy will pick up, or they might eventually become homeless. Some will shift to crime.
Because the unemployed have all that extra money lying around to pay for education?
Some do, but my real question was, how can someone be so discouraged that they stop looking for work, I still have not heard a good reason. Life is not always easy, and looking for a job can suck, I know that from experience.

I've been unemployed, with an engineering degree and graduate work done, since last July (relocation for my husband). I tend to look for work in shifts, and after countless applications, few phone calls, one horrible phone interview from an HR person who had NO idea what I was talking about, and two real interviews, well... sometimes you need a break.
I did have an interview yesterday, since I've been maintaining contact with HR people, so maybe I'll have good news soon. However, we are not hurting for money (we relocated because of a huge pay increase), and the jobs that are out there on careerbuilder and other places... they're stale. People keep recycling the same jobs, and not hiring. I've gotten countless emails where companies are on hiring freezes, or they're waiting on their budget to be approved.... there's only so much one can do.
