I'd use the appliances that came with the house until they had to be replaced. As long as they are clean and in good working order seems to be a waste to swap them based on color.
It's funny reading the older comments from previous years. Today, SS is considered the norm in many areas, whether it's due to HGTV or general market conditions (attempting to attract more buyers to your home with better updates).
I like stainless steel appliances and prefer them over white. My style is modern overall though. I like black appliances as well, but given that I like dark cabinets (not cherry, but cappuccino/venge) it would just be a dark look overall. However, black would look nice with the new grey cabinets that I am seeing more and more of.
Speaking of cabinets, I find it funny when some say they don't like stainless steel appliances because of the upkeep. Yet, someone wants WHITE appliances and/or cabinets?? Do people not cook in their kitchens? Or are people only microwaving food and pouring cereal? No family members, pets, or get-togethers with traffic in and out? To me, white has just as much upkeep, if not more, to keep them looking white and clean.
Fortunately, we all have choices. I'm liking the slate look, but I don't see it enough. Same with the bronze/copper finish.
I actually prefer white over stainless, I think the latter is going to eventually look dated.
However, if I am buying a house, I would just be happy that all of the appliances match in color. There is nothing worse than a black oven, white fridge and stainless microwave/range hood.
It doesn't matter to me, as long as white goes with the color scheme of the kitchen.
The real difference is the impression the kitchen gives when you first look at it. You know what they say about first impressions. So even if I don't care if the appliances are nice or not, whether they stay or not, I can't help but get an impression of the kitchen at first viewing because of the nice appliances or not nice appliances. I don't care if they're high end. But I like the color scheme to include the appliances (if it's a white cottage kitchen, the appliances could be either white or SS; if it's an old world beige kitchen, black or SS would go with; etc.).
I would never let the color of anything be a factor in buying a house.
while i agree with this i think the one exception would be the color of the floors, because that is very difficult to change, I mean it can be done, but its a huge task. Id pass on a house with cherry floors as an example....
but appliances, that wouldnt even be on my list, they can be changed so easily, I wouldnt even give that a thought.
All my appliances are black on purpose. I think it's a great look with my wood cabinets and beige tone countertops and floors. SS would be out of place and too industrial looking. White would just be too stark. This is just my opinion of course, and if I were shopping for a house with wood cabinets and beige tone countertops and floors I wouldn't let any color combo of appliances stop me if the layout was good.

I definitely prefer white. I like being able to see where the dirt and grime is. IMO, it is much easier to keep clean than stainless. You have to regularly wipe down appliances anyway and I like to do that without leaving fingerprints behind.
For some reason people seem to equate stainless steel with quality and I just don't understand that reasoning. I've worked in restaurants for years and I can appreciate the beauty, functionality, and overall awesomeness of professional quality stainless steel kitchens. However, I have never seen professional quality stainless steel appliances in a residence. World of difference.
It would depend if I was maxing out my budget. If I was buying a home where I could afford to replace appliances, I wouldn't care what was there. If I am buying at my high point and won't have several thousand extra dollars to spend, then I need to be happy with the appliances as is.
Color isn't an absolute dealbreaker but I do prefer the higher side of medium range appliances. A suite of nice, higher end white appliances would be fine. However, white appliances are often the least expensive ones, which sometimes have limited functions and options. I wouldn't buy a house with the cheapest, builder grade appliances no matter what color they were unless I could comfortably afford to replace them all.
For my last house, I did replace the range and built in microwave, because they were black, which I actively dislike. There was no fridge, so that helped matters since I was already spending that money anyway so it didn't seem quite as bad to replace a working range and OTR microwave (which I then donated). I left the black dishwasher because it was in a corner and kind of invisible.
