I think she was making up the most far-festched example possible to prove her point.

Not entirely farfetched.

Here's a real-life example of how extreme the desire to control the actions of others can be. This isn't an HOA - this is an actual government, existing in our world today, and the action being punished was in public - but it's an example of where this kind of thinking can (and does) lead. It's extreme, yes, but obviously not unrealistic (since it's actually happening), and it's just a short way down the road that I really would not like to see this country go but see signs that we might be headed that way (not over pants, but over other things, purple houses among them).

I'd rather live next door to a purple house than live in a neighborhood where someone was telling me I couldn't plant purple flowers ... or couldn't smoke inside my own home.

One of my favorites.
People observing the complete collapse of the social order, brought on by paint jobs:
Colored houses have some Cary residents seeing red :: WRAL.com

Bright houses have some Cary residents seeing red :: WRAL.com

I absolutely love the line, "We are interesting people. If I do change it, it would probably be another interesting color."

That's an extreme government with a known history of violating basic human rights. I don't believe that has a thing to do with the topic at hand.

Again, when you buy a home in a HOA, you agree to follow the rules that are current and might be. If you aren't willing and or able to do so, then you need to buy elsewhere. It's not rocket science.

Those houses aren't in HOA's. If the neighbors lived in an HOA they wouldn't have to deal with those colors. Frankly I LIKE bright colors when they fit into the neighborhood. (Think Key West for example) But I those particular colors look ridiculous in the neighborhoods they are in up in Cary.

On the other hand, because there is no HOA, the homeowners are free to do what they want with the color of their homes, and I'd never deny that.

What makes you say those homes are not in HOA's?

The blue one's owner actually pays dues to TWO HOA's.

I could have sworn someone in the video said that something about them not being in HOA's. I apologize if I misunderstood. If there are no rules about color in the HOA docs, then I don't see what anyone can do about it.

I said it was extreme - it's towards the far end of what can happen when people have the attitude that they should be able to force people to behave as if they hold the same beliefs (whether it be pants on women or smoking or purple houses). It's an example of what CAN happen if that kind of attitude is catered to.

The difference is that they dont' CHOOSE to live there.

If you CHOOSE to live in a HOA you agree to abide by their rules.

Not sure how that's such a difficult concept.
