I am thinking about buying a house in a suburb outside Atlanta. The house is perfect except that the neighbors next door have a very loud generator (100 decibels or more) that runs twice a week for an hour each time. The generator is next to the property line, and adjacent to the driveway of the property for sale. You can hear the noise clearly in the house when it's running; it would be impossible to be outside when it's running--it would drive you batty.
I think it's outrageous that these people are allowed to run this thing and disturb the neighborhood. Generator is the size of a small shed and is called "Ford Quiet Run", which must be the biggest joke of all time.
We are having a hard time deciding whether this is a dealbreaker or not. I really need your votes here, thanks.

Definitely a dealbreaker. Not only will it disturb you, but if you decide to rent or sell the home later on, it will make both of those considerations much more difficult.
The noise would definitely be a deal breaker for me. Of course, I guess you could ask the realtor to check into local ordinances verifying the gen meets city or county code.
When does it run? If it is during the week and everyone in the house is at work or at school, and I REALLY loved the house and it was priced exceptionally well, I'd consider it. Otherwise, see ya!
I also live in a suburb outside of Atlanta. I'm dying with curiosity how, why the neighbor needs a generator in the first place. Can share with us which suburb of Atlanta?
To answer your question, (for me) a loud generator noise at the property line is a DEALBREAKER !!! If there is one out there now, what is to stop the neighbor from putting out 10 more and/or running them 24X7?

Most likely a deal breaker. Especially if you are already describing it as something that would potentially drive you batty. I definitely wouldn't want to hear my neighbor's generator from inside my house!
I also think you may have issues reselling the property.
Deal breaker. If it grates on you now, it's only going to get worse, and it's definitely going to affect resale if you decide you can't stand it anymore and want to leave. But I like the idea of double-checking whether that thing is breaking any laws.
Ask you realtor to find out if it is against city ordinances to run that generator. Personally, I would take the time to go to those neighbors (without the realtor) and have a friendly chat with them.
