I bought my first home (a condo) when I was 24, primarily because it was cheaper to buy than pay rent. I've been a homeowner ever since. The only downside is the lack of mobility that Silverfall mentions. It's very hard to move somewhere on a whim when you own a house, although it's not impossible. I think there's nothing wrong with setting a goal to own in a few years, and save up a healthy downpayment. Good luck!
I'm in my 20s and single but think it's a shame to not have any ROI (return on investment) when I rent. I've always thought that I'd find a guy, get married, and then purchase a house but I'm not so sure that will happen anymore, at least not in the near future. What do you think of setting a deadline of buying a house at 30 on my own? (I do make very good money for my age so by that time I should have enough to put down a nice down payment.)
Go for it. I did it and it was the best investment I ever made.
