Agree. The only reason we have a TV in there now is because my mother lives with us and is in a wheelchair due to a stroke.........and it is her main enjoyment during the day. I am not sure what we will do with the alcove when she passes away. We would like to rip it out and maybe have a window above the vented gas fireplace. Of course we would like that whole wall to become a window as we look out on some lovely woods. Since the bump out for the fireplace is vinyl siding [the rest of the home is brick] it may just be do-able.....but not sure of the impact. I would rather have a gas operated generator than the fireplace. The flames are so hokey.

They are hokey, but not as hokey as the electric fireplaces I've seen in some townhomes... there isn't even an actual flame in there! It's just red lights cleverly (or not) flickering behind a "flame" image of some kind. I mean, why even bother??! No heat, either.
I could live with out one, it just means another thing for me to take care of. Besides knowing me if I bought a house with a fireplace in it already, I probably would not like the style of it anyway. I am a picky bitsh, LOL......
My brother has a real wood burning fireplace and the heat it gives off is great but it makes your eyes and throat very, very dry........The whole ambiance (sp) it gives off is very nice.
Now a days you can buy a fire feature easily. From picture framed gas fire features to outdoor fire pits. If you really wanted one you could have one. And if you really wanted a wood burning fireplace I'm sure with a little cash they can easily find a way to build you one. Here is an example of some of the cool fire features out there. It wouldn’t affect me at all. I have always had fireplaces and I never use them. The real ones are smelly, dirty, and suck heat out of the house. The gas one I have now, I don’t like because it takes up needed floor space. Fireplaces are very overrated IMO, unless you live in a house with no other heat source.
It's low on most people's priorities. I rarely hear it even mentioned. I actually did see a house once in SW Florida that had a fireplace but we seldom need heat at all most of the winter.
Whether it would affect resale depends on the market you are in. Is it possible to put one in? Not meaning YOU have to do it, but could it be done by a future buyer?
