Perhaps a member of your family lives out of town and needs a place to stay while visiting Mom. Have that person rent the house month-to-month for $1 and insure it as rental property. Put some furniture in it sufficient for short stays (and to show) to avoid any claim from the insurance company that it wasn't being used for the stated purpose.
I'm not condoning this, but most people with insurance on a vacant house have it because they don't tell their company that it's vacant... It's very hard to obtain insurance on a vacant property. Too many things can go wrong.
Why bother having any insurance on it then? The insurance company can argue it was a policy violation.

That's a way to pretty much guarantee that if there's a claim, it will be denied.
