Ok, we finally closed on our house. I used TurboTax to get my Form 5405 filled out, and I have a copy of my HUD-1 settlement statement. I filed my return back in February, and got my original refund, so this will be an amendment.

I have read the IRS' web page, and still feel like an idiot. So I am hoping someone here can be helpful.

1. Where am I supposed to mail these documents?
2. Do I also need to send a copy of the original 1040 document?
3. Or do I need to send a 1040X after I have amended it?
4. Or do I just mail the 5405 and accompanying paperwork?

So confused. Plus, I read it may take up to 20 weeks to get the credit back, ouch, that's a while, guess I'll get it back in time for Christmas.

Thanks.

Try this page discussing filing amended returns:
Tax Topics - Topic 308 Amended Returns
You will need to file a 1040X along with your 5405 and documentation.

Hi Mr Magoo

I completely feel you! I am here in Texas and I am the same, confused! I have been reading that loads of people have been given their refund anywhere between 7-9 months after they filed!

Does anybody know if this is the case and if you have filed an amended return for the credit how long did it take you to receive your return?
