I've come into some free apples. I was thinking of a pie--apple pie should be easy to make, right? Well, for one thing, I'm not really sure I have enough apples to make an entire pie. And the other thing is that even if I do, the pie gets to take up space in the refrigerator until I've finished the thing.

I was thinking of something along the lines of what McDonald's does for apple pies, or a "Hot Pockets" sort of thing. But I don't know how to go about making that sort of pie, I guess they'd be laid out on a cookie sheet instead of being put in a pie plate.

What type of recipe am I looking for?

What you're describing is a Southern fried pie.

Here is a recipe with step by step photo instructions:

I have the solution for you!

APPLE WRAPS

2 pkgs crescent rolls
2 Granny Smith apples
1 12 oz can Mountain Dew
1 1/4 cup sugar
1/2 stick butter or margerine, melted
1 t. cinnamon

Mix together the sugar, butter and cinnamon-set aside
Peel, core and cut each apple into 8 wedges
Roll 1 apple wedge into each crescent roll and line up in 2 rows in a 13x9 pan
Sprinkle sugar mixture over
Pour over the Mountain Dew

Bake 50 mins in a 350 degree oven. Serve warm- with ice cream if you want.

I think that you're going for the fried pie style even if you bake them on a cookie sheet. This would work too.

not martha — to make: tiny pies

Or you could make a tarte tatin, which is kind of a free-form upside down pie that can be made in any size pan or skillet. Find the right size pan for the amount of apples you have, and go for it. Delicious!

P.S. In response to the thread title, quiche is not pie.

I'm intrigued by the recipes that have come thus far. My room mate mentioned turnovers also. But that seems a LOT different to me.

I'm not saying it isn't a good idea, but there isn't really much difference between cobbler and pie, is there, and it's the same thing about having a big dish sitting in the fridge until I eat it all. With a Hot Pockets-style pie, I can freeze them and put them in my freezer. Plenty of room in there yet.
