Anyone have a great recipe for cocktail meatballs made with grape jelly, or some kind of jelly? My husband LOVES these. I made them once with a recipe I found online, but it used cranberry sauce and brown sugar, and he said they were good, but we're a little too sweet. I haven't been able to find a recipe online that seems good. I was hoping someone would have a recipe passed down, or got from someone else? Any help would be great!
You can use any jelly or jam or preserves, really. My mom uses red raspberry (seedless). I've used plum, and I've used grape. I cut the sweetness by adding a bottle of Heinz Chili Sauce and onion powder to taste. I for sure don't add sugar. You can play with the proportions until you're at your preferred level of sweetness or tanginess.
This base works well with meatballs, and also with cocktail weiners/sausages. Always the first to go at potlucks.
GAME DAY GLAZED MEATBALLS
1- 12oz. jar grape jelly or red currant jelly
1 cup BBQ sauce
1 16oz. bag of frozen meatballs, thawed (buy the mini size for cocktail size)
Combine jelly & BBq sauce in saucepan and heat just until jelly dissolved.
Add meatballs & heat for 20 minutes.
That's it.
We found this too sweet, and I don't buy meatballs. I use my own.
My adds:
I don't use grape jelly. I use peach or apricot.
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup soy sauce
1 small can pineapple chunks
3 dashes Tabasco Sauce
2-3 dashes of Liquid Smoke.
And, I put mine in the crockpot and low cook all Sunday afternoons, pre-football games.
That's a terrible thing to do to a meatball! I was just talking to mrsrainroosty the day before yesterday about it! Meatballs are not supposed to be sweet! Meatballs are those wonderful Italian creations that are so heavenly! Swedish meatballs? Ptooey, gag....(throw them on the floor and smish them all around with your shoe!)... I posted what I did, above, because when I read this thread it made me wanna .... Now, carry on & enjoy yourselves....I'll just keep my doors locked and sit in the gloom and be mad at the world for a while.....
