I like sauerkraut----being from Milwaukee and all the great German restaurants.

Yet this doesnt quite sound like the Milwaukee version of sauerkraut----and yes indeed, it is great on brats with a beer.

Way too sweet and too much oil. Just fry out some bacon and onions that are chopped. Put in the sauerkraut and saute it a bit. Add a couple of tablespoons of brown sugar. Add some sausages and you are good to go. I do not like caraway so I do not add it. Do not put carrots or celery in sauerkraut. Only a few spoons of sugar is necessary.

How about a jar of sauerkraut, a large can of cream of mushroom soup, dash of
Kitchen Bouquet, polish sausage, and, or, sliced hot dogs? Simmer.
Yeah, I probably butchered the way to fix sauerkraut....

I know my great Grandmother (She came from Germany) probably has a sauerkraut recipe that she may have passed down to my mom. I'll have to ask. She died in 1974 at age 95

1 cup sugar

One half cup cider vinegar

One half cup chopped celery

One half cup chopped onions

One half cup chopped green peppers

One half cup shredded carrots

One can (27oz.) sauerkraut, drained but not rinsed

Simmer sugar and vinegar until sugar is melted-let cool.

Pour over sauerkraut and other ingredients and keep in fridge over night.

That's it.
Sauerkraut salad is about the best salad for a large gathering I can think of, but we cut the sugar to about 1/2 cup. We just do not like sweet salads.

We have always served sauerkraut with the Thanksgiving turkey.
We use the kind from the deli/meat case, not canned. It simmers all day with bay leaf and peppercorns.
Have seen a recipe for a sauerkraut cake. No thanks.

Wow, I have never heard of it as a Thanksgiving day dish, but we all have traditions. I bet it is good and yes, you are right, the stuff in the deli section is much better.

In the section of Missouri I come from, kraut and pork is a traditional New Years Day dish.

We are from Maryland...
My mom used to say the sauerkraut thing comes from the many people of German origin there in the area.
Yes, now it is a tradition for us! We invite a variety of friends & neighbors for Thanksgiving, but my son and I are the only ones who eat the obligatory sauerkraut!
