Shell ice cream topping is that awesome, tasty chocolate syrup that hardens as soon as it comes in contact with the cold ice. It cracks as you dig your spoon into the bowl, giving you a nice chunk of chocolate along with a bite of rich ice cream. Yum!
You can buy it at the store, but it's expensive and made with all kinds of chemicals with long, hard to pronounce names. The store bought sauce comes in a container that is not microwave safe.
However, it is really easy to make at home and all you need is coconut oil and chocolate.
Get any kind of chocolate - 7 oz ( whatever you love - milk, dark, flavored or spicy (!) sweet or bitter, even chocolate chips ), chop it, add 2 tbsp of coconut oil and heat it slowly in a double-boiler or microwave. Remember to stir it in between till you get a rich , creamy consistency.
Keep it in the fridge in an airtight container ( a jar or bottle works great ). It will get hard again, so you need to microwave it a little before use.
Bonus tip:
You can use plain chocolate and add few drops of amaretto, vanilla, butterscotch, almond, caramel etc. extract. Or you can add 1-2 tbsp of real Amaretto, Kahlua, Godiva, Baileys or Cointreau Liquor. When adding alcohol, please use 8 oz of chocolate.

That sounds wonderful and I will definitely be trying it soon. Already thinking about white chocolate with some orange flavoring or strawberry, or about ten other combinations!!! I haven't had the hard shell stuff in years, but now that you mentioned it....it does sound reallyyyyyyyy good. Thanks!!

Thanks for sharing elnina, your version of chocolate on ice-cream sounds good & inviting to try, & I think I will, can't wait to try it!
Coconut oil is a very healthful oil....if you buy the filtered cocout oil, it doesn't have a strong coconut taste like the unfiltered kind.
