This is another one of my mother's recipes. I found it taped in another cookbook. It came from the Atlanta Journal and is delicious.

Brown Sugar Pound Cake

2 sticks butter
1/2 cup shortening
1 box dark brown sugar
5 eggs
1 cup milk
3 cups cake flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla

Cream butter, shortening and sugar. Add eggs and beat well. Add flour, sifted with salt and baking power, alternately with milk. Add vanilla. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

Caramel Icing

1 box light brown sugar
1 small can evaporated milk
1/3 stick butter

Bring sugar, milk, butter to hard boil and thicken to spreading consistency with powdered sugar.

Sounds absolutely wonderful.

But I gained half a pound just reading the recipe.

I know, I know! However, it is so yummy! We didn't have it often. My mother used to make it the week after Christmas. Don't know how much either of you read the other forums, but growing up my parents had an independent dimestore. Christmas was our "make it or break it" season so there wasn't a lot of time for holiday baking. My mother would always do Thanksgiving at our house and my aunt would do Christmas at hers.

The week after Christmas was a slow time for the store. We would inventory on December 26th and then mother and I could have a few days off. That week is when we took down the Christmas tree and baked the cake.

It's definitely a treat and over the years I've only made it for Christmas but it is good! Hope you enjoy this.

Do you bake this in a bundt pan or loaf pan?

nALgirl: good question! I've always used a tube pan but a bundt should work fine.

Wow that looks good. I'm going to save this and make it for Thanksgiving. Yummy.
