1 (15 ounce) can crushed pineapple
1 (18.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix

We had this one too (minus the nuts). Exact recipe. Recipes really got around, back in those days.
Sorry, but I can't imagine any GOOD cake that starts with boxed mix.
Making a cake dough from scratch is super easy, and the taste isn't comparable.
Try this. So simple, you just can't do wrong: https://www.rockrecipes.com/best-yellow-cake-recipe/

I've made that before (omitting the nuts), and everyone loves it.
I used to make another one, a simple lemon cake using DH yellow cake mix, extra eggs, and lemon pudding. I'd top it with powdered sugar, and everyone loved that, too. I hear, though, that boxed cake mixes have been "downsized," so that particular recipe wouldn't work anymore.

My mom used to make this easy recipe for us from yellow cake mix:
1 box yellow cake mix, prepared according to package directions in 13 x 9 pan
1 can fruit cocktail
2 small or 1 big box of red jello (raspberry, strawberry, cherry, whichever you prefer) prepared according to package directions
1 tub of cool-whip
Mix the fruit cocktail into the semi-set jello, and pour over the cooled cake (still in the pan, of course). Refrigerate until completely set, then spread the cool-whip over the entire top of the cake.
Sometimes, my mom wouldn't wait for the jello to start setting, and would pour it wet over the cake with the fruit in it. The cake would soak up the jello and set that way, and would make it super moist and tasty.
Ahh yes....THAT one. You beat me to it. I still bake one once in a while.
for me, it is forget any cake or anything with fruit cocktail. Canned peaches maybe, jello, yes but fruit cocktail: NOPE. Of course I rarely use canned fruit except maybe apples and cherries. Even then not often.

I think my favorite with yellow cake mix would have to be a lemon or run cake, but honestly I rarely use a cake mix. Oh, I take that back I do use a chocolate mix for making chocolate run cake.
