On the inside...we can make the fondant to decorate the outside with all sorts of blue, but he wants the inside to be ALL blue too! his whole birthday has to be blue! (go figure, my other two were never so "specific" about their cakes, and chocolate always won! LOLOL!) He's going to be 3, & we're making him a Toy Story "3" cake, and we know what the outside is going to look like, but how do I make it blue "INSIDE"? without being gross...we don't like butter cream, and usually only use whipped topping to cover the cake before fondant goes over, and also through the layers; but which food coloring goes on the cake? If I get the white cake mix, or the vanilla I'm thinking if I just put blue it will come out purple or green!? will it?
I don't know if this photo was Photoshopped or not...I can surely change the color of anything in Photoshop...but how would they have accomplished this?
To make it -that- blue, you'd probably need to use both blue -and- black food coloring. That photo's a little on the turquoise side, and turquoise is a mix of blue and green (heavy on the blue). But since blue in cake often turns a greenish hue, that's probably all it takes to give it the turquoisey tinge. The black will deepen the blue so it looks more like you did it on purpose I'd do something like 5 drops blue for each 1 drop of black in the batter bowl, and adjust from there.
Yes, you need to use white cake mix, and professional food dye that you can buy at michaels. The food coloring they sell in supermarkets will not get it that color. I have used the food dye you buy in Michaels and the colors come out amazing.
I think if you use white mix (not yellow) you should be fine.
Also, yuck! But I understand. My boy would go nuts for a blue cake.
I would try it (proves you don't have to be a little boy even). Looks almost like the Red Velvet cakes you see in the bakeries, except it's colored blue but then you see so many cakes with the red and blue icing and that tastes good too, albeit a tad sweet on the tooth.
Wayyyyyyyy back in the '60s, my brother wanted "all blue" for his birthday. I remember my Mom made him blue mashed potatoes, a blue cake...and I forget what else.
I would agree with those who suggest using a paste food coloring. Wilton (the cake decorating company) sells it in different colors, and it should work well for your son's cake.

I'm a tad older than 3 (I'm 47) and I'm not a boy, but that cake looks AWESOME! I hope you have great luck making it -- he's going to love it!
