I got a gyro the other day and for almost 8 bucks, I got a little bit of veg, some blah sauce, 3 skimpy pieces of meat and a piece of decent pita bread. I think I could make better for cheaper.
South Georgia must not be a gyro hot-spot. Here in Northern Virginia, a sandwich might run you $6.50 and would include 8-10 slices. Yum! Or you could do the platter for about $11 and get some fries and a "small" Greek salad that a mere single person cannot possibly finish. Kabob and gyro places are about as hard to find here as Starbucks. The recipe meanwhile looks fine and even includes some helpful preparation tips. I'd bet that it will turn out well.

I'm in Chicagoland and my usual gyro place charges $4.99. There is a gyro on every corner! Matter of fact I would say 2-3 on every corner.
I know that this isn't typical gyro but something that I've done at home is buy a good quality roast beef sandwich meat. In a pan add chicken stock and Greek seasonings. Bring to a slow boil. Add the roast beef slices to the pan and turn down heat and cover. Let beef simmer in this juice for ~10 minutes. With my homemade tzatziki sauce, warm pita, lettuce, diced tomato and onion slices this is so good.
We have a store called Winco which carries opaa brand gryos meat, tzatziki and several kinds of pita. Bet you could find these at a well-supplied grocery, if you didnt' want to make the recipe.
You can also use gyro meat to make doner kebabs, usually served in a split pita with a hot tomato based sauce, shredded lettuce/cabbage, tomato and lots of onion.
