my kids take fresh fruit to school every day for their snack time. The school is very strict about no junk food which is great for me. They also like to take crackers and I'm thinking of finding recipes for crackers so I can make them at home.

When they get home they like microwave popcorn-no butter or salt added. I like that cause they can do it themselves. The whole family likes fresh veggies and dip for snacks. One kid would eat potato chips every day but she is restricted to chips only on her plate as part of a lunch on the weekends. no digging in the bag as a snack.

In the summer we make a lot of smoothies with frozen fruit and skim milk.

Sometimes I bake cookies or a sheet cake and everybody is welcome to help themselves but no more than once a month.

and Cheese--we all love cheese. Those individually packaged string cheeses are popular. Also I stopped buying individual cups of yogurt (cost and sugar) so I make a big mess of plain yogurt and mix in some diet jam or preserves and fresh fruit and make little cups they can grab from the fridge for their snacks.

I am not embarrassed to say I tell my family to snack around 4:30 or 5 on the weekends if I haven't planned very well for a good dinner. It buys me some time to make sure I do right by them with a good meal. We are much more structured during the school week.

Do they make their own?

1/4 cup of popping corn
1 Teaspoon olive oil or butter flavored popcorn oil
Seasoning to taste - popcorn salt, lemon pepper seasoning, Montreal Steak Seasoning, powdered cocoa, Lawry’s, shake cheese, whatever, etc.
A brown paper bag (regular lunch bag size)

(Oil is necessary only if you want to season it. If you want to make it plain, you can skip it.)

Mix corn and oil together, put in bag.
Add your seasonings
Shake gently.
Fold the bag over twice.
Scritch with fingernail to make the fold tight.
Secure with a piece of masking tape if you want, but not really needed.
Microwave until the pops get about 3 to 5 seconds apart.

Hot! Watch out for the steam!

When it's done and if there are left over kernels - pop them in the same old bag you just used. They don't take as long, so listen after a minute or so for the delay in pops.

terrific^^^^^ I've read that microwave popcorn is not very healthy but never thought of making our own. I sometimes still use regular popcorn and shaking pan method, especially if i want kettle corn but I don't want the girls messing with the stove (gas) without me there. Thanks so much-I will try this soon.

Should I still use my popcorn setting on my microwave? It must go by weight cause it is different for individual single serving size and the bigger ones but how does it know as I don't see any measuring /weighing device? There are always some unpopped on the bottom when the auto popcorn setting is used and the girls don't have to wait right there totime it or listen to popping. In fact they stick the package in the microwave and run to the bathroom and it usually is finished when they get back in the kitchen. I make them wait at least an extra minute or two to avoid getting burned by the built up steam.

I have old appliances and I've never had a popcorn setting!
So - I can't help you with that - I just stand there and listen to the popping. LOL!

Roasted garbanzos. You put a bit of oil and spices you like on them, then roast them. Recipes all over the internet.
