I don't eat it very often. Sometimes on a cold, cold morning, I want some hot cereal. I usually add ground flax, almond meal, a dab of butter and a little bit of maple syrup. I might add a few chopped walnuts or pecans, or, berries or another fruit. I don't want it to be very sweet. I also like it on the dry side and cooked just enough to eat.
Personally, I find it gross, but not because of the savory element, just because I don't like oatmeal. I can and do put both cheese and hot sauce in grits. I generally prefer savory to sweet, but not even savory ingredients can salvage oatmeal for me.
I'm lazy I add a spoonful of apple sauce to mine .
LOL..guess that makes me lazy too.
Once I ran out of applesauce and used Smucker's natural fruit spread (blackberry) and it tasted pretty good. I started using it in oat bran muffins and cut back a little on the brown sugar. I don't eat oatmeal too often, but I sometimes make oat bran cereal and, if I have a ripe banana, mash it up and add it to the hot cereal with a little maple syrup.
I just use cinnamon. I have to count carbs with everything I eat, so I limit ingredients. Cinnamon is suppose to help with blood sugar, so that's it for me and oatmeal. I like how the cinnamon can make a bland oatmeal taste so much better.
I'll take one packet of instant oatmeal, and add at least an equal amount of "regular" rolled oats; If there's an open can of fruit in the fridge, some of the syrup from that goes in as well, and likely some raisins, dried cranberries, or dried apricots (cut into smaller pieces) -- whatever's available; I'll probably borrow an idea or two from what's been suggested in this thread.
And when we had a cat, he liked straight oatmeal, with a little cream, as well.
First, I use quick oats and add butter, dark brown sugar, pure maple syrup, a bit of salt (and possibly flaxseed), and I prepare it in the microwave.
I make this often for my husband and I for breakfast. I also cook it in our 900 watt microwave oven. The brown sugar and pure maple syrup gives it lots of flavor. I also add whole ground flaxseed, to add a bit more fiber, but you could omit it and just add a bit more of the quick oats.
Quick Oatmeal (For 1 Person)
1/3 cup quick cooking oats
1-1/2 teaspoon quick cooking oats (See *Note)
1 pinch of salt
3/4 cup water
3/4 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon pure maple syrup
*Note: you can substitute 1-1/2 tsp. of ground flaxseed for the 1-1/2 tsp. of quick oats
In a 2-quart casserole baking dish, add the 1/3 cup, plus the 1-1/2 teaspoons of quick oats. (If wanting to add flaxseed, just substitute 1-1/2 teaspoons whole ground flaxseed for the 1-1/2 teaspoons of quick cooking oats.)
To the bowl also add, a pinch of salt and the water.
Place the bowl in the microwave oven, and cook (uncovered), on high for 2 minutes.
After 2 minutes of cooking time, let the bowl set in the microwave for 1 minute. (Do not open the microwave while the bowl of oatmeal is setting in the oven.)
After the minute is up, remove the bowl, then add the butter, sprinkle on the brown sugar, pour on the maple syrup, and stir. (I usually don't stir in the brown sugar and maple syrup. I just let it set on top of the cereal, and dig in with a spoon.)
Yields: 1 serving
