Not being a multimillionaire like most of the "chefs" on those tv channels, I don't stock truffle oil, saffron, or hummingbird wings. I will occasionally make a dish roughly using a recipe I see on those shows but tend to keep things a lot simpler.
Saffron is only about 5 bucks at Trader Joe's. Don't tell
I've been watching food network since way back, when it pretty much was all cooking shows. I learned a lot, terminology, techniques and the "why" you did stuff. I loved the one man shows, Molto Mario, Bobby Flay before he was an Iron Chef, Sara (can't recall her last name). I really miss that. I dislike the new competition shows. I will go to their website and pick up recipes however.
Big fan of Alton Brown. Learned a lot of technique from his work and he does a nice spin on his dishes. If you even remotely like asparagus, do yourself a favor and whip up a batch of this: Asparagus Terrine Recipe : Alton Brown : Food Network You'll thank me later...
BTW - It makes me absolutely crazy that his technique of cooking asparagus in a flippin' microwave is drop dead bullet-proof. Could have saved myself some cash not buyer a steamer years ago, let alone messing up a number of batches along the way.
I love his shows. I watch them when I need to brush up on technique.
I've never cooked asparagus in the microwave, but I used to have an asparagus pot.

I did too! I'd forgotten all about it and I think it went in a garage sale once I purchased one of those steamer baskets. I never cared for all those woody stems anyway!

I may try the microwave version sometime.
I like asparagus, so it's worth it to me to fiddle with it. I snap off the lower end and pare the lower couple of inches with a vegetable peeler. That usually works.
