Just in time for Mardi Gras!

This recipe is at least 100 years old. It was handed down by my "black grandmother," who worked as the family's housekeeper for about 40 years and who raised my dad as her own son and me as her granddaughter. I used to sit on top of the yellow formica table in the kitchen of the house that my great grandfather built, and she'd let me lick spoons and bowls as she cooked and baked some of the best country food you ever put in your mouth! This recipe for Chocolate Bread Pudding was always one of my favorites, and we thought we had lost it. But my father found it written down among my grandmother's things when she passed away (my real grandmother - she and my "black grandmother" loved each other like sisters all their lives).

Anyway, here it is - just made it today and it is DELICIOUS and really brings back childhood memories. If you are into authentic, antique style recipes, here's a real keeper:

Six slices of "light bread" soaked in hot water - drain bread with a large slotted spoon and then put in large bowl. Add three eggs, two cups of sugar, 1/3 cup of cocoa, a pinch of salt, a teaspoon of vanilla, and two cups of milk. Hand mix till eggs are well blended into mixture.

Cut up a hard stick of butter - the original recipe says a whole stick but honestly, this is decadent and almost too heavy, so you can go with 1/2 a stick probably. Anyway, mix that into the pudding.

Bake at 350 for about an hour in a 9 x 13 glass pan - this works best, I've found. Believe it or not, this pudding will expand so don't go any smaller or you will have a mess in your oven!

Enjoy!

It was perfect, you were right about the butter and next time I'll use less butter than the half you recommend. This time I used some white sandwich bread, but next time I'll use a loaf of french bread.

Thank you!

I am so glad it turned out! And glad to hear feedback about the butter - I'll use a lot less next time too. If you make it with french bread, let me know how that turns out. I may try that too.
