Slight off topic: Some supermarket sell bottles of peeled garlic. Are they good? Not as fresh, of course, but are there preservatives or other additives? They are inexpensive and so convenient.

Bought a small jar years ago. Awful tasting. I think they added vinegar as an acid preservative. Contents went in the disposal, but kept the jar for paper clips.

Well, I just use a small sharp knife, first to cut off the end, then to lift up the skin so I can peel it off, then to cut the clove of garlic into large or small bits, thin slices, or whatever is needed.

I have found that the vast majority of little gadgets like garlic presses etc. really end up being more trouble than they're worth, unless you are preparing vast quantities of whatever it is. If you are just making ordinary family meals, about three different sizes of sharp knives will pretty much do everything, and be easy to wash, cheap to replace, etc., etc., etc.

Best example of this is the expen$sive food processor that takes more time to get out, put together, clean when finished, and put back up, than it would have taken to just do the same thing with a sharp knife.
