The nutmeg really perks (spices?) up a glass of milk, especially if slowly drunk while eating some apple pie.

Any other simple add-ons to milk that taste good? I’ve put a tiny bit of vanilla extract in milk before; I think the scent enhances the flavor.

On some nights when I simply cannot sleep, I get up and warm a mug of milk in the micro. I might add a couple of drops of vanilla extract, or coffee sweetener to it then. Otherwise I am not a big milk drinker.

I’m not a big milk drinker, either. If I do not have any for a long time, I lose what limited lactose tolerance I have, so I want to drink a little at least a couple of times a week.
the calcium and vitamin D are desirable, too.

I’ll shake a bit of ground cinnamon in it sometime. That probably goes well with it, too.

Having a slice of cheese might be easier.

When DH has trouble sleeping I heat him up a mug of warm milk with a little nutmeg and sweetener in it. He says it tastes like rice pudding.

I don't know if there's a scientific reason or if it's just the power of suggestion but he thinks it helps him relax. Maybe it's just the comfort of knowing someone cares.

I have decided that it is the suggestion, or possibly the action signals the body to sleep.

I'm not a milk drinker (at all -- hate the stuff) but I do have insomnia, so you'd think that... nah.

Anyway, milk contains tryptophan, which makes you sleepy. Also, calcium can help a person stay asleep longer.

I'm still not drinking it, though.

Not a milk drinker either. I grate a bit of nutmeg onto the whipped cream or ice cream I put in coffee. It's better than egg nog.

L-tryptophan also exists in turkey and a few other foods.

The only way I like cheese is browned on a pizza or melted in a grilled cheese sandwich or cheeseburger, with only a thin layer of cheese. And in a very few renditions of mac and cheese.
