Never had a crock pot before and can't wait to start using it. I remember my mom used to make pot roast in one and the whole house would smell good all day!
Any recommendation on a good crock pot cook book, or does anyone have any recipes of their own to share?
I love all kinds of food but would really like to have a warm hearty stew for the first meal in it...

I get my recipes right online now. I even goggle the ingredients on hand, the words "recipe." You could add the word "crockpot."

Most of my cookbooks are at our off-the-grid cabin, since that's the only place I need them.

My favorites are split pea soup, lentil soup, pinto or black beans, chili, & vegetable soup in my crockpot. I soak the legumes first. Wish I could give you some recipes but I just throw it all in.

Recipes are important, however, for your first time experiments since amount of liquid is pretty crucial to prevent burning.

Have fun!

I use my slow cooker for all the lentil soups and I have another slow cooker were I cook my milk rice in. I never tried to cook a roast in there. Anybody did that?

Simply Scratch » Crock Pot Balsamic Honey Pulled Pork Over Cornbread
The honey balsamic sauce on this one is fantastic

Another really simple recipe is to throw some chicken breasts in the crockpot with a jar of your favorite salsa and a packet of taco seasoning (or about 2-3 tablespoons of homemade taco seasoning). This is great over spanish rice, on tacos, in burritos, etc and so easy.

There is a whole series of crockpot cookbooks with Fix It And Forget It in the title:

The Fix It And Forget It Cookbook
The Fix It And Forget It Big Cookbook
The Fix It And Forget It 5-Ingredient Favorites Cookbook
Fix It And Forget It Lightly
Fix It And Forget It Vegetarian
Fix It And Forget It Christmas Cookbook
Fix It And Forget It Recipes For Entertaining

...and on and on. I used the original one for a while and got such a good sense of what the ingredients and proportions needed to be for each recipe that I could start making up my own recipes.

When I fix a roast, I line the bottom and sides of the crockpot with scrubbed redskin potatoes, lay the salted/peppered meat over the top and pour a jar of gravy over the whole thing. Hi setting for 4 hrs or Lo setting for 8 hrs and voila.

My fave recipe for winter is cabbage soup.

1/2 small head of green cabbage, chopped
1 8-oz can tomato sauce
1 can of beans, liquid and all
1.2 c pearl barley
1 lg or 2 sm carrots, sliced
2 lg or 4 sm ribs of celery, sliced into horseshoes or chopped
kernels cut from 2 ears of corn or 1 can whole kernel corn, liquid and all
2 32-oz cartons Swanson veggie broth
2 Tbsps instant onion flakes
5 good shakes black pepper
5 good shakes Italian seasoning blend
3 good shakes granulated garlic

Hi for 4 hours or Lo for 8 hrs. If you want you can add a handful of bacon bits, chopped ham, or suchlike an hour from the end of cooking.

I make pulled pork, marinara sauce, chili, sausage, peppers and onions, kielbasa and beans, chicken legs/thighs on the bone in my crockpot and sometimes beef stew.

My favorite is pot roast

3-4 lb roast
2 cans Golden cream of mushroom soup
2 cans Cream of Mushroom soup
2 envelopes Lipton onion mushroom soup
potatoes
carrots
onions

Mix soups together and take half and put it on the bottom of the crock
Add roast ( I salt it with Lawry some garlic powder and black pepper)
par boil carrots and potatoes about 20 minutes
saute onions
(Use any amount of potato carrot and onion you wish)
Place in Crock pot
Pour remaining soup mix over meat and veggies

Cook on high a couple of hours then reduce to low (low and slow) all day .

I like to cook it until the meat starts to fall apart.
