I've been on a quest for a relatively healthy pizza as of late, and have been through a bunch of good (and not so good) recipes.
So my girlfriend and I made this pizza last night, and it was surprisingly good for a "healthy" one: Lighten Up: A Healthy Pizza Recipe
and the nutrition facts are pretty good:
Quote:
Nutrition facts per serving (1/4 of pizza): 281 calories, 20g protein, 31g carbohydrate, 8g fat (3g saturated), 2g fiber
This has me wondering, what do you all do to make your pizza healthier?
I think you'd be better off making your own pizza dough, so you can use a healthier oil like olive oil. Those refrigerated doughs are full of soybean oil. You could also use fresh veggies for your toppings instead of meat. And of course the part skim/light cheese.
Whole wheat crust, lots of veggies, no meat, light cheese.
Exactly, and honestly whole wheat crust is tasty! I am not sure if you mean light-cheese or light on the cheese, I think either will give you the results you are looking for. <3 homemade pizza-pie

Yep, I think that is about the most you can do to make it healthier.

I meant light on the cheese , but Light cheese would work too. Homemade pizza IS the best!
Most pizza ingredients are high sodium. Try to use a lower sodium cheese and sauce, and avoid using too many cured/seasoned meats, olives and anchovies.
I use loads of veggies...usually slice and steam zucchini and/or yellow squash and put those on, fresh tomato slices instead of a lot of sauce, bits of broccoli, artichoke hearts, spinach leaves.
Just enough cheese to bind the toppings together...using fresh chopped garlic and Italian herbs for seasoning adds enough flavor that you don't miss the extra salt of lots of meat and cheese. I would use smaller portions of full-fat or skim milk cheese, rather than using fat-free cheese...fat-free cheese rarely melts well and maintains a plastic-y consistency often...just cutting down on the amount of real cheese is preferable.
