When I took a new job several years ago the office manager was unbelievably beautiful, and I avoided looking at her because I didn't want to stare. Months later, after we became best friends and a little more, she told me she didn't think I was attracted to her initially because I hardly looked at her. Apparently it didn't hurt my chances much, because she did everything imaginable to attract me. (I was married at the time and also her boss, so I did all I could to keep my distance, but she was persistent.)

My guess is that she was so used to guys staring at her that when I didn't she saw me as a challenge.

I'm usually way too busy staring at a woman's chest to even make initial eye contact. When I do happen to make eye contact though, I open my eyes really wide and stare as hard I can without blinking .. that way, she knows I'm dominant. Works like a charm.

Silly, I know.

Not silly at all. I have been in situations where beautiful women have looked at me, even stared, and I am so uncomfortable I look away quickly.......only to find them still staring when I look back.

A little eye contact is fine, but I hate being stared at. I can't see making some sort of contest out of it - who looks away first.

I never heard of anything like OP's theory that if the man looks away first it is a sign of weakness.

Just let things happen naturally, for pete's sake! Why does everything have to be a game?
