5'7 220 lbs is a BMI around 35, which is only mildly obese
And it says nothing about his body fat & fitness level. It's entirely possible he's actually in great shape. That's the failure of the BMI as a health measurement--if you are average and don't workout then sure, it applies. But if you're involved in sports, military, fitness, and so on then you're naturally going to have more lean muscle mass and the BMI doesn't apply.
