Everywhere. I live in a friendly place where people still say "hello" when you pass them and they make conversation. Over time, acquaintances develop into friendships.
If I meet someone who is new to the area, I make a point to be extra friendly. These are people who are usually open and looking for a friendly face.
they usually involve the beach, or grilling food outside, or live music, or camping out in the swamp on somebody's land. people know people who know people, and we all get together and have fun.
then of course you have activities. people who surf, or kayak, or play golf, or hunt, or fish, will socialize with one another.
or you can hang out on city data?
So many opportunities, that must be a nice where you live.
City-data is the only escape I have.
Unless you are a wrench-head male under age 35 or have a gaggle of children, absolutely none, which is why I have more than 2,600 posts here in seven months (six, if you consider that I lurked for about a month to see what it was like, first).
Long Island is without a doubt one of the most boring places on earth for a kid-free careerist in her early 40s to be.
City-Data is good, I lurk a lot too, so many views and opinions, and on so many subjects. I only found it by accident through an unrelated search, I’ve been hooked ever since.
So it’s not just where I am then.

Facebook has helped to reunite me with a bunch of great, old pals.
And, it has served as a "meet & greet" for new ones too.
Several meet ups/ social events have been planned and gone to, and it has been a blast!
I’ve got a Facebook account, I'm the one with no friends.
