My wife and I do this, and find it a way to say the dirty things to each other that we may find to embarassing to say verbally. It is really is fun and makes a boring night(when we are apart--we both travel alot) a little more spicy(especially with pics) :-)
People do it because it's fun and sexually exciting. Like phone sex or porn or cybering or anything. Just because there is no physical contact doesn't mean it can't excite someone.
I am a horrible texter, especially with my iPhone's "predictive text" kicking in. I once took a pic of my uncle's dogs, and emailed them to him from my iPhone. The subject was supposed to be "Doggy Pics" but predictive text turned that into "Foggy Pigs". He got a kick out of that.
If I tried "sexting", I'm sure it would be hilariously awkward.
It has a lot to do with a total lack of morals, values and decency which seems almost epidemic in this society we live in. I guess, what most people don't realize is the fact that those explicit pictures are property of whatever cell phone carrier they are using. So, basically anybody at T-Mobile, ATT, Verizon could intercept and use those pictures any way they choose to.
I have a co-worker who is a cell phone hacker and he knows how to intercept those pictures, download them to his computer and if he wanted, he could start his own porn site one of these days, using your pictures.
Unfortunately, society as whole gets dumber and dumber by the minute, people don't even know what common sense is anymore!

This is only true if you assume that expressing sexual interest in someone is immoral, indecent, and without value.
Thankfully, many people are well adjusted and don't have such sexual problems. Thankfully, we live in a free country where there is no morals police. Sadly, there are still lots of sexually repressed people in the world. Sadly, the morals police still exists in some ugly corners of the globe.

The phenomenon of sexting among young, unmarried people attests to the deterioration of the Western Christian-based moral code into an atheist mentality of "do what you want, uh, just don't hurt anybody, unless they did something bad to you or they're unborn". It's disgusting and popular...two adjectives which seem to often seem to go together today.
