However, there are quite a few who are offended by the fact that men and women are different, and that this difference is used to justify oppression of women. I am not approaching it from that angle. Women should be free to do whatever men can, even if there are some differences between them and us men. You and some others in this thread are commenting on gender roles, but I'm talking about root psychological traits. Men and women have different brain structures, as well as different hormonal types, so this lends to psychological and behavioural differences.
Gender roles are loose extensions of these psychological traits, which were developed very long ago when our knowledge of psychology was non-existent. I think personally that older and more traditional values are being discarded since our knowledge of the world invalidates them.
What we get offended by is when people suggest the differences between men and women are far greater than they really are. It suggests that these people are just in denial. Yes, men and women are different in terms of our root psychological traits, brain structures, hormones, etc. But what's also true is that our brains are fully capable of deviating from whatever evolution programmed them to be. That's the beauty of having free will and being self-aware. It isn't our knowledge of psychology and of the world that's causing people to discard "traditional" values. It's simply people waking up to the truth, women realizing that a lot of what they were told they couldn't do was a big lie perpetuated by men who wanted to stay in control. You call it brainwashing. I just call it opening one's eyes.
No, it's because our knowledge of the world as it stands today refutes many older ideas.
Which implies that those older ideas were just wrong. The people of the Earth once thought it was flat and the Sun revolved around it. But they gained knowledge of what the world is really like. By the same token, people today have come to realize that men and women aren't nearly as different as they were lead to believe. Sadly, some people still haven't accepted that.
Hallmark opinions.
Alphas are usually highly muscular, lots of testosterone, aggressive, decisive, controling - in today's world that may mean becoming CEO, a cop or, often a criminal when paired with poor impulse control.
Wiki
In social animals, the alpha is the individual in the community with the highest rank. Where one male and one female fulfill this role, they are referred to as the alpha pair (the term varies when several females fulfill this role – it is extremely rare among mammals for several males to fulfill this role with one female). Other animals in the same social group may exhibit deference or other symbolic signs of respect particular to their species towards the alpha.
The alpha animals are given preference to be the first to eat and the first to mate; among some species they are the only animals in the pack allowed to mate. Other animals in the community are usually killed or ousted if they violate this rule.
The term "alpha male" is sometimes applied to humans to refer to a man who is powerful or in a high social position. Alpha female is used to indicate a highest-status female.
The status of the alpha is often achieved by means of superior physical prowess. The individual in the alpha position usually changes when another challenges it to a fight (in some species to the death) and wins. Consequently, alphas may have to fight individuals in their own group several times to maintain their position throughout their lifetimes. In species where the fight is to the death, alphas rarely reach old age. In some species, a nomadic individual may approach the alpha, successfully beat him, and thus become the new alpha. When this occurs in lions, the new alpha usually kills the previous alpha's cubs. In lions, several individuals may share alpha privileges in what is known as a coalition.
The social group usually follows the alpha to the hunt and to new breeding or resting grounds. The alpha is thus sometimes seen as deciding the fate of the group. If two groups of the same species find themselves competing for the same ground, they may let the alphas fight, letting the outcome decide which group stays.
We are talking about MEN, not lower forms of life in the animal kingdom
Alpha males should not be confused with those full of machismo, for those kinds of men really are closer to those in the animal kingdom.
Real Alpha Males don't have to declare it to everyone. That is like Michael Jordan coming out and saying he is the greatest basketball player ever. He would never say that because he doesn't have to. Everyone else says it for him.
Real Alpha men put their noses to the grind and handle their business for their families. They don't worry about what others are saying. If it means changing diapers, working overtime, fixing a leak, rubbing his wife's feet when she gets home, helping with homework, or giving orders. Whatever his family needs to prosper, he observes it and does his best to help deliver.
Real Alpha men are NOT a dying breed. Like most truly valuable things in our society they are not in your face. You have to look a little deeper. Their impact is seen in the people who love and depend on them.
What's the difference between an alpha male and a beta male? The alpha male doesn't need to label himself an alpha male. He knows that's what he is and doesn't care if others think he is or isn't one. The beta male (or manlet), on the other hand, worries too much about what he is and how that puts him at a supposed disadvantage in the dating world. Maybe if he spent less time describing himself as a beta, less time worrying about how many alphas he's competing against, and more time just learning to like who he is, he too wouldn't care what the rest of the world labels him.

And too the alpha male doesn't even spend any time thinking about whether he's an alpha male or not while the beta male (at least in this instance) obsesses about it to a most unhealthy degree.
