You still can't prove their origin.

What do you mean?

The history, oral and written, is unassailable. So is DNA evidence. So is culture. The Africans in Latin America are more African culturally than those in North America.

I have no idea what you're getting at. How do you think all of those hundreds of millions of dark skinned, nappy haired people playing drums and eating African-originated foods got to Latin America? Did they emigrate from South Carolina or North Philadelphia?

I'm confused here... It's not like the Haitians hailed from Norway!

I guess she insists on being recognized as Haitian and not being lumped together with the local African-Americans... Because I don't think the race could possibly be a source of an argument... Considering what sort of a country Haiti is, I'd rather be called African-American if I were her.

That's what it is......Caribbeans, Africans and Afro-Latinos often do not want to be lumped in with the North American black people.

I don't know what we were talking about during one conversation, but she said "you don't think I'm African, do you?" I figure it's about nationalism, culture, etc.

Ha! What a joke!

Population: approximately 8.3 million, almost entirely of African origin.

Traveling Haiti .com

I wonder what she thinks she is...

It's also about colonial mentalities and self-hatred.

I wouldn't know, tho, it was the first time I've come across it. She's a very dark woman, so her ancestry is obvious. Self-identification can be complex. I can relate to that. Italian Americans, for example, have a distinct culture. Ancestry is traced back to Italy, but we have our thing going on in certain regions of the US that is outside Italy/Europe.
