Well, I won't pretend to know the history of Haiti, but that's what a quick search turned up. I've never seen a Haitian looking like anything other than a person of African descent. What's the rest of the population then? Oh, never mind - you edited your post while I was typing.

Anyway, it doesn't sound like this woman is Caucasian or Asian.

Because they're called Italian Americans, Polish Americans, Portuguese Americans, German Americans, Irish Americans, Serbian Americans, Greek Americans, Russian Americans, etc.

African Americans know only that their ancestry is African, and they have no other specific knowledge to go on. Hence the term African American.
