In 1933 in the movie She Done Him Wrong, Mae West called Gary Grant, dall, dark, and handsome. This is how the phrase became popular, and she was referring to hair color.
I always associate that phrase with tall and masculine black men. Like ballers for example. Not sure if a white dude or guys of other races can be referred to as "dark". That would be a bit strange.
Same here!
"tall, dark, and handsome"= tall, hot black man
in my mind.
America always steals Black culture. They stole Jazz, Rock and Roll, and it is now happening with Rap.
What is curious, is that African Americans completely abandon these things once they are stolen.
Oh puleez. "Tall Dark and Handsome" is certainly nothing that was "stolen" from AA culture. Actually it was the title of a 1941 movie, and there was not a mention of jazz clubs in it.
Well, it may not have been meant to describe black men.......but we have since taken over the description.
